Make sure you have put your lawn mower other power equipment to rest properly.

Give your lawn mower a good season end cleaning and tune up. It worked hard for you this year. Show it some appreciation and it’ll work hard for you again next year too. Drain all the excess gas out of the tank and run it until it shuts off. Be sure that a blade sharpening and balancing is included in your tune up.

Now is the time to protect your young trees from sun scald.

In the winter the sun reflects off the snow and warms the thin bark and it begins to thaw. As the sun sets, the temperatures drop, refreezing the plant tissue. Young trees can experience vertical splits in the bark from this stressful freeze/thaw cycle. In October or November you need to wrap the trunks of susceptible trees to prevent splitting. We recommend the inexpensive neutral brown colored wrap that comes in rolls. Simply wrap around the base of the trunk, working your way up to the lowest branches. Use black electrical tape to secure the wrap. This tape is expandable and stretches throughout the winter. DON’T USE DUCT TAPE, it is very restrictive and does not stretch. If you do not shovel the lighter snowfalls away, ice builds up and you are stuck with it until spring. That is why we offer 1″ service.

Ice melt products vary greatly. We recommend you purchase ice melters with the following characteristics.

• Performs effectively to -5° Fahrenheit.
• Non-toxic to children and pets.
• Not harmful to carpets, floors, shoes and leather.
• Will not stain concrete, asphalt or pavers.

Regular roof raking (every 4″) reduces the chance of damaging and costly ice dams forming.

We recommend that you remove snow above 4″ from your roof and deck. Rake the first 4-10′ up from the fascia along your roofline using aluminum or plastic snow rakes. Frequent removal of snow will insure that your roof will not develop ice dams and will make it easier on you when you do it. Be sure to protect shrubbery on the ground from the falling snow when you are roof raking. Clear the snow away from your foundation and decks when excessive build-up occurs. When snow exceeds 4″ on your deck, we recommend shoveling it off.

To reduce stressful weight, we recommend that you remove snow above 6″ from deck. Be sure to protect shrubbery on the ground from the falling snow when you are roof raking. Sand and salt left on your garage floor cause corrosion of the concrete.
